Graeme McDowell was in a reflective yet bullish mood ahead of this week’s LIV London event at Centurion Golf Club, twelve months after the Saudi backed tour’s inaugural event.

McDowell landed himself in hot water for his comments in London twelve months ago as did Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood with the 2010 US Open champion drawing widespread criticism which he admits he took personally at the start of the LIV Golf tour.

“There’s been a lot of stuff written about the players out here over the last twelve months and I take it with much more of a pinch of salt than I did at the beginning,” said McDowell who missed out on qualifying for the Open Championship on Tuesday.

“I think I took it a bit too personally at the start, when I have the sense of perspective that I have now I look at the professional people that wrote these things were really only protecting their own turf and protecting the organisations they were paid to represent which is all we were doing – we were protecting the organisation we were being paid to represent.

“I really don’t blame anyone I understand the motivation for the narratives that were being created.”

McDowell was speaking to the assembled media at the LIV London pre-tournament press conferences and he is looking forward to playing in front of the UK crowds again.

“I always love playing golf in this part of the world, the fans are educated, they understand what a good shot looks like, Wentworth and the Open Championship of course, and just all my experiences of playing golf here in this part of the world I always love it so looking forward to the weekend.”
