The next two DP World Tour events will be an Open Championship ‘Last Chance Saloon’ for both John Murphy and Tom McKibbin.
Murphy and McKibbon are the only two remaining Irish who can earn a Royal Liverpool tee times after each of the 18 other Irish teeing-up Tuesday failed to secure one of 19 Open spots on offer at four final qualifying venues.
Graeme McDowell headed the large Emerald Isle contingent but his efforts to contest golf’s oldest major for a first occasion since 2019, were spoilt with rounds of 72 and 68 or a four-under tally at West Lancashire.
Murphy tees-up today’s starting DP World Tour’s Made in Denmark, and the only Irishman in the 156-player field and the Kinsale golfer will need to finish top-3 among those non-exempt into The Open to be assured of a Royal Liverpool tee time.
And there’s Holywood’s McKibbin who is taking this week off before heading to the Genesis Scottish Open where he’ll join fellow Irish Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Seamus Power in co-sanctioned PGA Tour event.
However in contrast to the other four, McKibbin is not exempt into The Open and like Murphy this week, he’ll also need to finish top-3 among those competing east of Edinburgh not exempt in order to get on the first the at Hoylake.
