David Carey is just one step away from making his third PGA Tour start of the season after firing a nine-under-par 63 in the pre-qualifier to earn his spot in the Monday qualifier for the John Deere Classic.
The big-hitting Dubliner who has previously shot a 57 while playing on the Alps Tour and was within touching distance of the top 10 after two rounds at last year’s Open Championship at St. Andrews, was in blistering form at Pinnacle Country Club, birdieing four of his opening nine holes, before adding four more on the back nine, plus an eagle-two at the 17th.
This afforded him the luxury of being able to bogey the final hole and still safely book his passage through to Monday’s final qualifier, and should he successfully navigate the final stage, he’ll tee it up on the game’s elite tour for the third time in 14 events.
He took the same route into the Valero Texas Open back in late March and then again in qualifying for the RBC Canadian Open three weeks ago, and though the occasion proved a little much at TPC San Antonio, he improved significantly at Toronto’s Oakdale Country Club and will be hoping it’s third time lucky should he play his way into TPC Deere Run.
It’s a tall task however, with just four spots up for grabs and 75 players competing, but Pinnacle Country Club is set to host the Monday qualifier as well and Carey has shown that he’s more than capable of going low at the Illinois course.
