Graham Donohoe survived a three-hole playoff with Simon Miskelly to claim the Leinster Mid-Amateur Open Championship in Courtown.
The Enniscorthy man played the three holes in one-under-par to win by one from Miskelly in a thrilling final day and he was thrilled with how his maiden mid-amateur championship appearance played out.
“The competition is different, it is very well run and gives a chance to older players to enter competitions like the mid-am and give them a chance to win one of the championships which I am very proud of having done today.
“The course is absolutely fantastic, fabulous greens which were very fast and some tricky pins.”
Both players couldn’t be separated after 54 holes on one-over-par with Donohoe shooting a level-par 71 while Miskelly roared alongside him with a 68 that included two birdies in his last three holes.
Donohoe started well with a brace of opening birdies before dropping a shot on the third. A third birdie arrived on the fifth before he dropped three shots in six holes with bogeys on 7, 9 and 12.
He regained the lead with a birdie on 17 before Miskelly birdied the par-3 18th to force extra holes.
Arklow’s John McDonald was third on four-over while Fermoy Scratch Cup winner Dean O’Riordan was fourth on plus seven.
