Richard O’Donovan feels his game is in a great place to attack the Sunshine Tour this season and play his way onto the DP World Tour next year.
O’Donovan earned category nine status for the 2023/24 season on the Sunshine Tour after the Lucan native finished in a four-way tie for 17th in the Final Qualifying stage at Heron Banks Golf and River Club last month.
O’Donovan was eligible for the season-opening FBC Zim Open at Royal Harare Golf Club in Zimbabwe this week but missed out as he was back home in Dublin trying to recruit sponsors for the coming year.
It was a missed opportunity as he has the chance to improve his category if he can show some form before the mid-season shuffle but he at least showed he is playing well after winning the Roganstown Pro-Am on the Irish PGA region.
The Dubliner is itching to jet out to South Africa for the summer and try an earn enough points to qualify for the DP World Tour next season.
“I feel like my game is in a completely different place compared to last year. I feel like I have made lots of improvements and all parts of my game feel very sharp. I am really looking forward to the season ahead in particular looking forward to getting out on the Sunshine Tour and getting my European Tour card.
“That’s what I want to do and playing on the Irish PGA region isn’t the place to be doing that but I’m home now and I’ll play the events that I can and it was nice to get out on the course and perform.”
O’Donovan was disappointed to miss out on Sunshine Tour action this week but was pleased with the consolation of winning in Roganstown.
“It was good to get out on the first event of the season. Unfortunately, it was an Irish PGA event, I got my Sunshine Tour card a few weeks ago and the second round of the first event was on today so I should really be out in South Africa playing my golf but I’m at home trying to pick up a few sponsors before heading out to the Sunshine Tour when I can.”
