Jake Whelan’s impressive showing at the Munster Men’s Amateur Open Championship last weekend sees him go first in the Bridgestone Order of Merit.

The Grange golfer reached the semi-finals at Cork Golf Club before he was defeated 3&2 by Harry Gillivan of St Anne’s on Bank Holiday Monday.

Former leader Barry Anderson (Co Sligo), who reached the decider at the West of Ireland earlier in April, has been pushed down to second place, while Marc Boucher (Carton House) is third. Last weekend’s surprise winner in Cork, Jason Law (East Cork), has moved up to tenth place.

In the women’s section, Emma Fleming (Elm Park) remains in first position. Aideen Walsh (Lahinch) follows closely behind in second with Kate Dwyer (Rossmore) rounding out the top three.

Fleming’s exceptional performances lately also earned her the Bridgestone Player of the Month for April. She finished ahead of Kate Dwyer, Barry Anderson and Aideen Walsh in the voting.

With the season in full swing now, there are two major competitions on the horizon with the Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open taking place at The Island between 11-14 May. Woodbrook hosts the Flogas Women’s and Girls’ Amateur Opens from 19-21 May.
