Douglas’ Robbie Walsh Jnr will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup with Gary O’Flaherty in the mix for a fifth title.
Walsh Jnr led by the minimum after the first round on Saturday morning after a three-under 69 edged him ahead of Nenagh’s David Reddan.
The Cork man stretched his lead to three as he carved out a level-par 72 in the afternoon.
Walsh Jnr was flawless in the morning carding birdies on the second, eighth and fourteenth but his afternoon effort was a mixed bag as conditions began to worsen.
Birdies on 8, 14 and 16 were cancelled out by dropped shots on 7, 13 and 15.
Cork’s O’Flaherty came into the week as defending champion and he is certainly a horses for courses type of golfer and he will go into Sunday in second place.
The four-time champion has carded seven birdies and as many bogeys across his opening 36 holes.
Dundalk’s Eoin Murphy recovered from an opening 78 with a superb afternoon 69 as he catapulted up 38 places into a share of third place with Douglas starlet Jack Murphy and Galway’s Pariah McGrath.
Murphy’s 69 was the best score of the afternoon while his namesake Jack carded rounds of 73 and 74.
Lying in wait in a share of sixth place are Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty, Morgan Cain, Joe O’Sullivan and Reddan.
