The Masters, the favourite for most golf fans around the globe, the start of spring, the first major of the season, the perennial beginning of the golf season.

Unfortunately it appears three-time Masters winner Gary Player doesn’t see it that way.

In a feature interview with The Daily Mail, Player claimed that the Open Championship “is by far the greatest tournament on the planet” with the US Open in second, PGA Championship third and the Masters a lowly fourth.

While the Masters is synonymous with the line that will be used to death: ‘a tradition like no other,’ Player feels the Masters has catching up to do in terms of steeping itself in the history of the game.

“But, never mind the Masters, the Open is by far the greatest tournament on the planet,” Player told the Daily Mail.

“I rate the Open at one, the US Open two, PGA three and Augusta four; Four marvelous tournaments.”

“[The Masters is] the youngest of the Majors. The others are steeped in tradition and history and they still have to catch up. Nothing comes to the top without time.”

During an illustrious career, the South African won nine major championships, the Open and the Masters three times each, two PGA Championships and one US Open title.
