Max Kennedy is in a share of second place at the halfway stage of the South American Amateur in Ecuador.
Kennedy who opened with a one-over 73 replied with an excellent round of 68 to move to three-under and five adrift of Mexican Jose C Islas.
Kennedy who hails from Royal Dublin briefly fell to two-over after an opening dropped shot but responded with birdies on both par fives on the front nine to turn in 35.
A strong back nine of 33 which included birdies on 11, 13 and 15 moved him into contention.
The Louisville student has two top-10 finishes in the States this season and looks set to continue his good form this week.
Galway’s Liam Nolan was alongside Kennedy after a 73 of his own in round one but he moved into a share of 7th place after a two-under 70 saw him climb to one-under-par and seven off the pace.
Nolan carded four birdies and two bogeys in his second round.
The NUIG student was included in the provisional 19-man Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup squad for September and with performances abroad set to be a key factor towards final selection a good week will put him on the radar of the selectors.
Meanwhile in the women’s section Kate Dwyer is in a share of 21st position on eighteen-over after two rounds while Clodagh Coughlan is three shots further back.
