Open Championship fans may be denied the sight of Tiger Woods rounding off his playing career in St. Andrews at the Open Championship in 2030.

After the highly emotional scenes in July this year at St. Andrews where he missed the cut, Woods spoke of possibly winding-up his Open Championship at what will be the 158th hosting of golf’s oldest major.

With Royal Portrush now firmly on The Open rota, it means the next hosting of golf’s oldest major at the Home of Golf has been pushed back eight years away.

At that time, Woods will be aged 54 with the big question ‘will he if he will still be competitive up until the next St. Andrews Open?’, and this question was never more pertinent than at this week’s Hero World Challenge with the tournament host being forced out with a hugely-painful plantar fasciitis on his right foot.

However, having played just seven rounds in three events this year, Woods is no wiser if he will be fit for next year’s 151st Open at Hoylake, let alone St. Andrews in 2030.

“Well, I don’t know. To be honest with you, I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it back one more time as a player in the tournament,” said Woods.

“You know, maybe I might — I probably will go back and play it at some point with Charlie and have a great time, but I think it’s, what, eight years away, I believe?

“That’s a — I don’t know what this leg is going to look like in eight years. Hopefully it’s still attached, but we’ll see.”

Of course, if Woods eventually tees-up at the Home of Golf he’s not going there to make-up the numbers

“I just don’t want to go back and just say farewell. I want to win the damn thing,” he said.
