Pádraig Harrington is hoping to bring out his Sunday best as he bids to hunt down Jerry Kelly at the Dominion Charity Classic and ascend to the summit of the Charles Schwab Cup.
Harrington trails Kelly by three shots heading into the final day after a five-under-par 67 saw him move to nine-under.
Current Schwab Cup leader Steven Alker is in second place on –10 after a sublime 65 and Harrington is aiming to click into gear on Sunday having not had his A game for a couple of weeks.
“Yeah, tough play for tomorrow, haven’t really got it going yet this week, so doesn’t mean — I might play better tomorrow and score worse, but hopefully it all falls in place tomorrow,” said Harrington.
The three-time major champion will feel he left one or two shots out on the golf course in particular the par-5s which saw him par the sixth and the eighteenth.
The US Senior Open champion is the longest hitter in the field and he feels he will need to take advantage of the par fives and driveable par fours if he is to overtake Kelly on Sunday.
“I gave myself good chances on the par 5s, I think I’m 6 under for them, which, you know, at the end of the day’s not too bad. But it would be nice with the way I’ve played them, maybe there’s an eagle around the corner, hopefully so,” said Harrington who was bogey-free on Saturday with birdies on the 2nd, 7th, 9th, 15th and 16th.
“I just try and play every hole as well as I can. You can’t always, like I hit in the greenside bunkers on both the par 4s today, I got up and down on one of them, didn’t the other. Just because you can reach them doesn’t guarantee you’re making birdies on them.
“Yeah, if I can thread a few birdies together on a few of the other holes and then hopefully make a few, maybe even zip in an eagle there, have a chance of going very low, for sure. But you’ve got to be patient. Just because you can reach the holes, and generally they get a little tighter on the angles I have to go on, I don’t take it for granted, put it like that.”
Meanwhile Darren Clarke lost ground on the lead after a level-par 72 saw him remain on three-under and in a modest 34th place.
