Saudi Golf CEO Majed Al Sorour has issued a rallying cry to LIV golf outcasts that he will create his own major championships and will “celebrate” a major championship ban on the LIV rebels.
Al Sorour also says; “All tours are being run by guys who don’t understand business”, according to The New Yorker.
Having previously received no response from PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan regarding potential investment in the PGA Tour, LIV’s second most important decision maker behind close friend Yasir Al Rumayyan is planning to go toe to toe with golf’s four elite tournaments.
Al Sourour told The New Yorker: “I will create my own majors for my players.”
This could come as a blow for those players who have been advocating for world ranking points and places in major championships despite moving to LIV and those who have been flocking to high-profile DP World Tour events to maintain their place in the top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Souror was handed the Saudi Golf post in 2018 and he was a consistent feature in last week’s trophy photos with Jeddah Invitational champion Brooks Koepka and his Smash GC teammates.
As it stands just six LIV players are projected to end the year inside the top-50 in the world rankings. Cameron Smith looks like he will hold onto a place in the top-10 while Chilean starlet Jaoquin Niemann will be inside the top-30.
DP World Tour points thieves Abraham Ancer and Talor Gooch are likely to be inside the top-50 while LIV individual champion Dustin Johnson and Harold Varner III will be playing a risky game with the top-50 bubble.
Bryson DeChambeau will fall outside the top-50 for the first time since entering in almost five years while Jason Kokrak, Kevin Na and Brooks Koepka are all unlikely to maintain their spots in the top-50.
Pending exemptions from previous major championships a lot of the LIV players outside the top-50 wouldn’t be eligible for golf’s elite events should they be granted permission to compete in the coming months.
But hey, they can make up their own masters in a desert somewhere. The winner gets a cactus.
