Ireland are sitting in tenth place after day one of the 2022 World Junior Girls Championship presented by Sargent Farms.
The team of Rebekah Gardner, Marina Joyce Moreno and Katie Poots are a collective six-over-par and ten shots off the lead where hosts Canada are tied with Spain on four-under.
Two scores out of the three team members at Angus Glen Golf Club will count each day so it was Gardner and Joyce-Moreno who got the ball rolling for the Girls in Green.
Clandeboye’s Gardner is two-over after a 74 while Joyce-Moreno of Club de golf Llavaneras is two shots further back after a 76. Knock’s Poots is on seven-over following an opening 79.
In the individual leaderboard, Gardner finds herself in a share of 16th place, just six shots adrift of Angela Arora of Canada.
Three birdies in five holes saw the 18-year-old turn a difficult day into a decent one after a horror period around the turn.
Gardner started well with a birdie on the par-3 2nd before dropping six shots in six holes from the 6th. Three successive bogeys were followed by a par as she turned in 38. However, a bogey and a double bogey to open her back nine was a rocky start. However, she rallied in style with birdies on 14, 15 and 17.
Joyce Moreno is inside the top-30 after an opening round that had a bit of everything. Dropped shots on the first and third saw her turn in 38 before she fell to five-over with a bogey on 10 and a double on 12.
Like Gardner, Joyce Moreno also responded gallantly with three birdies in four holes before she closed with back-to-back bogeys in a back nine that included just two pars.
