Moving day was a slow day for both Harrington and McIlroy as both failed to kick on and gain any momentum at the Travelers Championship.
Harrington began the day within striking distance just three shots off the leaders but a one over par 71 leaves the Stackstown professional eight shots behind Jordan Spieth on four under par.
For McIlroy it was another frustrating day with the putter. McIlroy ditched the red Spider Tour putter he had used in the opening two rounds and went for a Taylor Made mallet putter for round three. An even par round of 70 saw McIlroy remain at level par overall and well down the pecking order after just scraping the over the cut line.
McIlroy was seen with a number of putters on the putting green before his round and eventually made the switch.
At the top Jordan Spieth retained his lead for a third day running birding three of his closing four holes heading to the final round of.
The American posted a four under par 66 to move to 12 under and one clear of Boo Weekly who shot a 65 to be at 11 under.
Spieth is looking not only to capture a tenth PGA Tour victory at the Travelers but only a second when the Texan has led start to finish, and with the first occasion being in capturing his first Major – 2015 Masters.
And the current World No. 6 was asked his views of contesting the final day of the $US 6m event in the company of “Boo”.
“I hope I’m having as much fun each day as Boo’s having. I mean, he lives it up and it’s fun to be around Boo,” he said.
“He’s always very nice to everybody he sees. Has some kind of a joke. If he’s had a couple pops you barely understand him with his country accent. He’s a guy everybody very much respects and really likes being around, and that’s fun.
“That’s fun to play with. He’s a really good ball striker who a couple events that I’ve been involved in in the heat of things he shot very low numbers on Sundays. He’s not afraid to do so.
“But, yeah, to answer your question, I can certainly see it, but it’s not uncommon for me out here on the PGA Tour to play with somebody that’s a veteran who has won a few times around Boo’s age.
“There are certainly guys that are in a similar position to myself. I don’t think that will be anything that I’m thinking about tomorrow”.
