Shannon Golf Club is the host this week for the Women’s and Girls’ Interprovincial which got underway yesterday. The Ulster Women are looking for three in a row while the Leinster Girls’ are seeking to defend their title won at Slieve Russell in 2016. The Leinster Girls’ Team started the 2017 Matches vs. Ulster with Georgia Carr & Emma Fleming teeing up against Beth Coulter & Maeve Cummins in the morning foursomes. The South Dublin pair won their match 2&1 and it became a clean sweep when Jan Browne & Anna Foster overcame Nicole Joyce Moreno & Anna McVicker 3&2. The singles matches continued to go in Leinster’s favour. Wins for Kate Lanigan, Leah Temple-Lang and Ellen O’Gorman secured a 6-2 win, form they will hope to continue when they face Munster on Day 2. It was also a 3-0 for the Leinster Women against defending Champions Ulster in the morning foursomes. Ciara Casey & Mary Doyle managed 5 birdies in their closing 6 holes to beat Jessica Ross & Louise Coffey by a one hole margin. Likewise, Aedin Murphy and Ariana Coyle Diez were comfortably under par in their 4&3 win over Chloe Weir and Jennifer Fawcett. Ulster battled in the afternoon and Louise Coffey went 3 ahead after 8 against Irish Close runner-up Ciara Casey, closing out the match 6&4. Deirdre Smith showed her experience however by winning 6&5 against Lurgan’s Niamh Ward to give Leinster their first point of the afternoon while Aedin Murphy duly followed, beating Chloe Weir on the 18th green. Louise Coffey and Niamh McSherry secured two points for Ulster vs. Ciara Casey and Ariana Coyle- Diez while a 10-foot putt on the last was enough for Jessica Ross to halve with Meadhbh Doyle. The Connacht Girls’ managed two wins in the foursomes despite a 6&5 win for Munster pair Aine Donegan and Anna Dawson. The afternoon singles were a tight affair, Shannon Hegarty won 6&5 with Roscommon’s Chloe O’Connor levelling with a win over Kate McElroy by the same margin. Maeve Rooney and Aine Donegan halved their match and Niamh O’Dwyer beat Sinead Lohan 2&1 leaving Anna Dawson and Annabel Greham to decide the tie. One ahead on the 18th, Dawson hit her approach over the back while Greham, who had to lay up, hit it close for birdie to secure the half point and match. The Connacht Women’s team banked just half a point this morning courtesy of Anne McCormack and Shannon Burke. Burke went one better in the afternoon, overcoming Sarah Cunningham by 2 holes. Anne McCormack beat Gemma McCarthy also on the 18th but wins for Lisa O’Shea, Karen O’Neill and a half point for Aoife Lowry against Enniscrone’s Hilary Hall gave Munster a 5 – 3 victory.
