Irish amateur Paul McBride from The Island, playing this week on the European Tour on an invitation, is showing real determination and was on -4 in T30th place with one hole of his second round to complete after the event was halted yesterday due to fading light.
McBride finished his second round this morning in Hamburg and unfortunately double bogeyed the 18th with a seven and dropped down to two under par. He’s still inside the cut line (projected at -1) and hopefully he can bounce back later today.
The event is being led by England’s Ashley Chesters on six under par who managed to finish his round before the delays yesterday and he said, “I definitely didn’t hit it as well off the tee today but the putting made up for a lot so that was nice..”
“I didn’t even realise I had gone bogey free, it didn’t really come into my head on the way around so, it’s always nice to keep the bogeys off the card, it’s the easiest way to get a good score. It’s a completely new experience, Saturday is going to be totally new to me but the whole year has been a learning experience for me. I seem to have learnt a lot so far so I’m guessing this is going to be the same.”
Ireland’s other representatives at the event were Paul Dunne who is on level par after a second round 70 and looks set to miss out on the weekend, while Chris Selfridge is on +4 and Michael Holy retired.
The event has been grabbing the headlines for the luxurious Porsche cars being used as courtesy vehicles for the week (understandably) but yesterday saw a raft of disqualifications and retirements as with play suspended players who had little or no chance of making the cut left the course and fly home, without completing their second rounds. All in all there were 10 DQ’s with three retirements with players such as Eddie Pepperrell and Pat Perez in the DQ list while David Howell, Michael Hoey and Anthony Wall retired from the event.
