Lauren Walsh sunk the winning putt to give the Wake Forest Women’s golf team their second SCC Championship in four years and their seventh in history at The Reserve Golf Club on Sunday.

Walsh and her team defeated Florida State in the final after a superb back nine comeback turned the tie on its head.

The Deacs made the turn trailing in three of the five matches before Rachel Kuehn came back from two down to win the first point of the final with a 25-foot putt on the 18th.

Wake Forest secured a 3-1-1 win after Walsh drained a monster 55-foot putt to beat Alice Hodge 1UP to give her university the title and queue dramatic celebrations.

Walsh and co certainly had some unfinished business in this championship after Covid rendered the defence of their 2019 title non-existent and a bitter semi-final defeat to Florida State last year had Wake Forest gunning for revenge.

The Castlewarden native was delighted to get the win and feels her team were so determined to right the wrongs of the last two years.

“We stepped on campus into a team that was defending ACC Champions,” she told Wake Forest’s media team. “We didn’t even have a chance to defend the title in 2020 and losing in the semifinals to Florida State last year definitely put a bad taste in our mouth.

“We were so ready to play and compete this week and get the job done. We were excited to play today and couldn’t be happier we’re ACC Champions.”

Walsh had lost her semi-final match 6&4 but now leaves Pawley’s Island with a third-place medal from the strokeplay qualifying and the ACC Championship to take back to Wake Forest.
