Jack Murphy came out on top at the Leinster U-16 Boys Open after winning a three-hole playoff at Tullamore Golf Club.
Despite relinquishing a two-shot overnight lead, the Douglas golfer did enough to see off Massereene’s Michael Wilson after the pair finished on level-par after 36-holes.
Murphy edged Wilson by a shot in the playoff to take the title after a nervy finish in regulation time.
Murphy looked to have sewn up the title after moving to three-under for the tournament through 13 holes of his second round.
The Cork man carded two bogeys in his final three holes to drop out of the lead and into a playoff with Wilson who came from five behind to force extra holes.
Wilson carded a round of the day 67 to come from five-over and join Murphy in the playoff.
The game looked up when Murphy birdied the first play-off hole (the par-5 15th) which opened up a three-shot advantage. Despite closing with a double-bogey on the 18th it was enough for him to win out by the minimum.
Enniscorthy’s Sean Cooper claimed solo third after a three-over 73 to finish on that score. The 2021 Irish U-14 Boys Champion didn’t come away empty-handed as he collected the under-15s category by two shots from Finlay Eager of Royal Belfast Golf Club, Gordan Sillett of Ballykisteen and Belvoir’s Evan Hogg.
