Conor O’Rourke has blasted his way into the lead heading into the final round at the third event of the Mediterranean Tour calendar in Egypt after a scintillating display of golf.
The Naas professional’s play made the pyramids look ordinary at times as he returned a 10-birdie haul at Katameya Dunes Golf Club in East Cairo.
Having started the tournament with a dour two-over 73 by comparison, winning never looked on the cards this week but after posting a nine-under par 62 on Sunday, O’Rourke finds himself in a share of top spot on seven-under par and with it all to play for.
Yet remarkably, Naas club mate and travel roommate, Jonathan Yates has his good friend within his sights and is just one stroke adrift of the leading mark after adding a superb 67 to an opening 69 to sit in a share of 4th on six-under par.
Let’s hope there’s been no overnight antics between the pair and they’ve both slept soundly ahead of their respective tilts at the €40,000 prize pot on offer.
Meanwhile Dubliner David Carey carded a disappointing four-over par 75 to add to a lively 67 on day one to drop into a share of 16th spot on level par.
