Olivia Mehaffey will be targeting a big weekend at the Investec South African Women’s Open on the Ladies European Tour after another rough outing on day two.

The Tandragee woman, who has started the season slowly, slid down the leaderboard after her second round at Steenberg Golf Club as she carded four bogeys and just one birdie in a three-over 75 in Cape Town.

That dropped her down to five-over for the tournament and, although she made the cut with a shot to spare, she looks to be out of the running for the title as she sits 12 shots off leader Becky Brewerton.

Mehaffey struggled in her second round despite starting her scoring with a birdie at the par-five fifth, but three straight bogeys to finish her front nine saw her make the turn in one-over, and she would add just one more bogey on her back nine, at the 15th.

While she never looked like missing the final two days, the former Arizona State star has designs on competing at the business end each week, and she will hope to haul herself up the standings in the latter half of the tournament for some momentum moving forward.

At the top, Brewerton added an outstanding bogey-free six-under 66 to the 71 she shot on Wednesday to open up a commanding four-shot lead at the halfway stage at seven-under-par.

The Welsh wizard turned in four-under and then added back-to-back birdies to finish her round to extend her advantage over second-placed Magdalena Simmermacher of Argentina, the overnight leader carding a 73 to go with the 68 she had in her opening round.

England’s Felicity Johnson and France’s Anne-Charlotte Mora are in a share of third at two-under-par, with Leonie Harm, Maiken Bing Paulsen and Josefine Nyqvist the only other players under-par, sitting one-under at the midway point.
