Castle’s Robert Moran found top gear on moving day to race to a six-under par round of 66 and move inside the top-5 ahead of the final round of the African Amateur Stroke Play.
Moran was one-over par for the first seven holes on Wednesday at Leopard Creek Country Club, trading two birdies with three bogeys in a tumultuous start.
However, it soon clicked for the Dubliner who birdied 8 and 9 before adding five more in a brilliant blemish-free back-nine with Moran now in a tie for 5th at four-under par, albeit nine strokes back of runaway leader Casey Jarvis.
Moran sets the standard from an Irish perspective with Galway’s Liam Nolan next best after a much-improved two-under par round of 70.
Nolan was four-under par through 11 holes of round three but dropped two shots to the clubhouse where he sits in a tie for ninth at two-over.
Malone’s Matthew McClean also returned a much better second round, matching Nolan’s two-under 70 with six birdies in Malelane.
McClean shares 14th at five-over with Bray’s Alan Fahy (T28) still at 10-over after an even par third round and Carton House’s Marc Boucher in a tie for 40th after a three-over 75.
As for the winning of the event, South African star Jarvis looks a strong candidate after he moved four strokes clear of compatriot Yurav Premlall after getting to 13-under par courtesy of a moving day four-under 68.
