Former Masters champion and world number one, Ian Woosnam has announced that he has played his last Masters Tournament, calling time on a brilliant Major career.
The Welshman, who’ll be 64 by the time the Masters rolls around in April, earned a lifetime exemption into the tournament courtesy of his memorable one-stroke victory over Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal in 1991.
Last year was Woosnam’s 32nd appearance at the Augusta National showpiece having previously called time on his Masters adventures in 2016 due to a debilitating back injury that he eventually corrected with surgery.
However, having managed to make the weekend just once in his last 20 appearances at the event, and with the course only getting longer, it seems this time ‘Woosie’ really means it, resulting in last year’s 30th anniversary of his famous win being his last Masters Tournament.
“Thought long and hard about playing the Masters again this year and in the future, but it’s time for me to watch the young guys play,” Woosnam told Twitter.
