Junior golfers across Ireland will have the chance to tee off at an all new golf competition this year, the Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Golf Trophy, from August 15-17.
In addition to the overall competition, which will be open to beginner, advanced and elite golfers both boys and girls, prizes will also be awarded in three age categories namely; under 18, under 16 and under 14. The junior golfers will play Kilkeel and Warrenpoint Golf Clubs, with the opportunity to qualify to play Royal County Down.
This exciting initiative has been organised by Newry, Mourne & Down District Council in conjunction with the Golfing Union of Ireland (Ulster Branch), Irish Ladies Golfing Union Ltd (Northern District) Royal County Down, Warrenpoint and Kilkeel Golf Clubs.
The Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Golf Trophy will provide junior golfers, both boys and girls of all ages and ability with outstanding opportunities to experience great competitions, on wonderful courses, at top class venues with the aim to develop junior golf.
Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said that “The Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Trophy is an exciting new golf tournament that will be competitive, challenging and fun for junior golf and will aim to help every child enjoy the sport of golf.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the Newry, Mourne and Down region and to attract junior golfers from the island of Ireland and beyond. Newry, Mourne and Down District council hope to see this junior golfing event established as an annual event.”
At a time when stemming the fall of participation numbers in our sport is most crucial, innovations like the Summer Trophy are just what the golfing doctor ordered. Hats off to all involved.
