Six players share the lead after Round 1 of the AIG Irish Men’s Amateur Close Championship at Tullamore GC.
Robert Moran (Castle), Paul Coughlan (Castleknock), Robert Abernethy (Dun Laoghaire), Ross Halpin (Dun Laoghaire), Keith Egan (Carton House) and Jack McDonnell (Forrest Little) all share the lead on -3.
The packed leaderboard sees 16 players under par, including 2021 champion Hugh Foley on -1. Moran’s round consisted of seven birdies and four bogeys, and the Castle golfer’s -3 on the back-nine saw him shoot up the leaderboard.
Coughlan’s round saw the Castleknock golfer record four birdies and a bogey on an impressive scorecard at the Offaly venue. Dun Laoghaire duo Abernethy and Halpin took different routes to their -3 total. Abernethy’s round included an eagle and three birdies, while Halpin birdied six of the holes.
Both Egan and McDonnell bogeyed 18 to slip back to -3. The bogey on the final hole was the Forrest Little golfers only blemish on an otherwise perfect card.
Six further players lie a shot back, including last year’s Irish Boy’s Champion Sam Murphy and Carton House’s Paul O’Hanlon. 2020 champion Foley looked on course to lead after the opening round, and at reached -5 at the turn, but signed for an opening 69.
The top 40 players and ties, will make the half way cut at the conclusion on Saturday’s Round 2.
