Co. Sligo’s TJ Ford is the 119th South of Ireland Amateur Open Champion, sponsored by Pierse Motors.

The first golfer from the Rosses Point club to win the historic title, Ford defeated Dun Laoghaire’s Alan Fahy 5&4 at a sun drenched Lahinch GC to win the famous trophy.

Seven birdies in 14 holes helped Ford to the title and he wrapped it up on the 14th with an excellent birdie.

Fahy won the first hole, but it would be the only time Ford would trail during the final as he won the second and never looked back, going 3-up through the turn.

“I can’t believe it”, a shocked Ford said afterwards. “I’ve been dreaming of this, since I was a 10-year-old putting in Sligo. Admittedly it was for the West of Ireland, but I’m not picky. I’m more than happy. It’s an incredible feeling.”

“County Sligo is a club steeped in history with plenty of Championship winners. To have my name with those now – people I idolised – it’s incredible.”

Despite the loss, Fahy was proud of reaching the Final after an incredible week for the Wicklow golfer.

“I wouldn’t be looking back with sorrow. I’m delighted with this week. It’s good for the confidence. I’m disappointed I didn’t win, but delighted to reach the Final.”

Earlier in the day, Ford defeated Fortwilliam’s Hugh O’Hare 2&1, while Fahy overcame Enniscorthy’s Paul Conroy 3&2.
