Many of the players who featured in the AIG Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship at Ballybunion will be involved over the next two days on the shores of Lough Ree.

The Senior Open will be played over 54 holes on Thursday and Friday for players with a handicap between 8.0 and 12.4, with the Junior competition being played over 36 holes for players with a handicap of 12.5 to 26.4.

One player looking to impress in the Senior Open is Lauren Murray. The Woodbrook golfer lost to Rachel Thompson on the 19th hole in Round 1 of the Matchplay in Ballybunion, and is hoping to bring her form into Athlone.

“I’ve been playing in Woodbrook since returning from Ballybunion. It’s similar to Athlone, so it’s good practice for the days ahead. I played well in Kerry, and was under pressure. I need more of those scenarios to get comfortable with it.”

Played as a stroke play event, Murray, who is also on Golf Ireland’s Development Funded Programme, admits she will need to refocus after the matchplay situation she found herself in in Ballybunion.

“I’m a risky player, and just go for things. I’ll need to manage the course. Decision making will be key if I am to play in the three rounds. I know I can do it, but I just need to keep focused. I’d love to finish in the top-10 come Friday evening. That would be a good week for me.

The first round tees off on Thursday morning at 7.30am.
