Golf legend Annika Sörenstam is set for a sensational return to the fairways of the LPGA Tour this month after a 13 year absence.

The 50-year old Swede, who retired at the top of the game in 2008 to start a family, will line-out at the season opening Gainbridge Championship in Florida where Sörenstam has lived for a number of years. The 10-time Major winner, who boasted 90 worldwide titles by the time she retired, will look to make home advantage count when the Tour restarts at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club from February 25-28.

“I’ve thought about it since I heard the event was coming to Lake Nona, where we have lived for years,” said Sörenstam. “The members keep asking me to play and I figured, why not?”

All going well it won’t be a one and done situation for Sörenstam this year either with the Swedish star hoping to add the US Senior Women’s Open in August to her playing calendar, “schedule permitting”.

Sörenstam’s name was in the news recently after she accepted a Presidential Medal of Freedom from former POTUS Donald Trump in the wake of the siege on the US Capitol. Not alone in accepting the award, Gary Player was also present with both golfers coming under fire for their decision to attend the ceremony in light of the events in Washington. For Sörenstam’s part, she explained that she wasn’t interested in looking back, only forward:

“I have always viewed it [the medal] in the context of the people through history who have received it,” she told Golf Channel. “It started in 1963 and it’s quite the impressive list of people; whether that’s through science, art, entertainment or sport. It’s really about people that make this world a better place.

“I’m not one to second-guess. It [the ceremony] was supposed to be in March 2020. Looking back at it, it’s really about the people who have received it through history. I don’t want to spend energy looking back. I want to spend energy looking forward, continuing to open doors and create opportunities for young girls around the world.”
