Cork Golf Club’s Paul Buckley became the latest Irishman to enjoy success in the UAE after securing a one stroke win at the Omega Emirates Men’s Amateur Open at Emirates Golf Club.

At the same venue where Rory McIlroy won his maiden professional title at the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic, Buckley edged out Zubair Firdaus with his two-under par total good enough for a one stroke win.

The proud rebel paid a visit to renowned putting coach James Jankowski prior to the tournament and that proved money well spent with Buckley needing just 28 putts in an opening three-under par 69 before closing out the tournament with a 73.

Level with Firdaus entering the final day, it wasn’t all plaining sailing for Buckley who bogeyed his opening two holes but a bounce-back birdie on the third saw him settle thereafter, with Buckley knocking in a pair of twos en route to victory on the famous Majis Course.

Douglas’ Karl Bornemann was also in action, enjoying a top-10 result at four-over par.
