All eyes turned to Tuam Golf Club today as some of the golfing stars of the future took part in the hotly contested Golfstyle U15 and U17 Close Championships.
Following heavy overnight rain, which added significantly to the length of the course it was Thomas Higgins from Roscommon in the U17’s and Adam Challoner from Galway Bay in the U15’s who emerged victorious with both carding rounds of +1 (73) on the challenging parkland layout.
For Higgins it was a tight affair, edging it as he did by just one stroke courtesy of a birdie on his final hole to take the title from Liam Freeman (Ballaghadarreen) who parred all the way home from the 9th green to finish second, one stroke ahead of Oughterard’s Raef Ford.
It was a somewhat more straightforward victory in the humid conditions for Challoner who had three shots to spare over his nearest rival, Oughterard’s Padraig McNeela (+4) who in turn had four to spare over third placed Oscar MacCready (+8) from Loughrea.
