Phil Mickelson is just two rounds shy of becoming just the eighth player over the age of 50 to win on the PGA Tour.

Mickelson turned 50 on June 16th and now 10 days later has placed himself in contention to win what also would be a 45th PGA Tour title

Mickelson also set about collecting a third Travelers title with ‘Lefty’ brilliantly grabbing the 36-hole lead with a sizzling 63 for a 13-under par tally, one clear of 24-year old compatriot Will Gordon (62) and Canadian Mackenzie Hughes (68).

“This golf course is really one of my top favourite courses to play having won here, as I did in 2001 and 2002, so I am excited to come back this year and to play well in putting two good rounds together,” said Mickelson

“And the fact that I have turned 50 is not that significant to me as I think anytime you can win is a good win regardless of age.

“So, for me to be able to put myself in contention and hopefully win some tournaments would be a lot of fun and a great accomplishment, and those guys who have won aged 50 or older have shown a lot of resolve and determination.

“I certainly enjoy the challenge trying to play my best against these great players that are coming up.”

Mickelson’s last victory was in the two-hole Monday finish to the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

He recorded his first PGA Tour win as a 20-year old amateur in capturing the 1991 Northern Telecom Open.
