Triple Major winning Vijay Singh has avoided any further controversy with his decision to withdraw from the Korn Ferry Tour Challenge, being held from June 11-14 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Singh, 57 was the centre of a very-heated social media debate early last month when he decided to enter the secondary Tour event.
The furore began when American Brady Schnell lambasted the Hall of Famer Singh for entering the event, with Schnell referring to Singh a “piece of trash”.
“Do you know how much those points and money could do for a young kid?” tweeted Schnell, who has missed five of six cuts on the Korn Ferry Tour this season.
“He’s a complete turd for playing. He’s got his money and he’s got his career. Just wait another month and roll with your senior friends.”
Schnell, 35 later pulled the tweets but only after Singh found support in the strangest of quarters when fellow Masters winner, Phil Mickelson came to Singh’s defence.
In his apology, Schnell said: “A different approach should have been taken in order to get my point across. I will learn from this and be better.”
Singh, not the easiest of people to approach or speak with on the Tour, elected not to respond to the criticism, though he must have spoken to someone or someone spoke to him, as his name has been withdrawn from the Sawgrass field.
