Graeme McDowell fired a four-under par round of 67 to beat the traffic to the clubhouse as the Mayakoba Classic moved to a Monday finish in Mexico.
Darkness halted play at El Camaleón Golf Club with a stacked leaderboard leaving five live chances for the title ahead of today’s finale.
McDowell looks odds on to settle for a top-25 finish after posting six birdies in his closing effort as his resurgence to the top of the game continues. The Northern Irishman had got to five-under par through 13 holes on the round before a bogey at 14 was followed by four pars as he made the clubhouse in 67.
With McDowell headed home, four holes and just two strokes separated five men with their eyes on first prize. Americans Vaughn Taylor and Brendon Todd marked their balls on the par-3 15th as light robbed those gathered in Mexico of a thrilling finish.
The pair are tied at the top at 20-under par with long-time leader, Harris English, whose last win came at this golf course all of 170 weeks ago, playing with them and one shot further back while home favourite, Carlos Ortiz is also at minus-19 but has just one hole to play.
With three holes left, Adam Long is the last remaining hope for the title at 18-under par.
