Castlewarden’s Lauren Walsh didn’t take long to announce herself on the collegiate scene in America after blasting her way to a seventh-place finish on her Wake Forest debut in South Carolina.

The Kildare amateur fired seven birdies in a stunning final round of three-under par 69 to grab a tie for seventh at minus-five at the Cougar Classic.

The 19-year old’s contribution helped her new Wake Forest teammates to a second place finish in the team standings, one shot behind winners Vanderbilt.

The Demon Deacons shot 26-under over the three rounds at Yeamans Hall Club, the second-lowest 54-hole score in their programme’s history.

It’s the continuation of some stunning summer form for Walsh after the Freshman helped herself to a top-10 finish as an amateur amongst the pros at last month’s ISPS Handa World Invitational at Galgorm Castle. Unsurprisingly, it was a performance that pleased Head Coach Kim Lewellen who looks to have a strong panel of girls on the roster this term.

“It was nice to come off a strong season last year and not miss a beat to start this year,” said Lewellen. “These young ladies showed a lot of heart this week and it’s enjoyable to watch them compete. I am looking forward to seeing what is next for this group.”

The Demon Deacons will return to action next week with their inaugural appearance at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Minnesota.
