Seamus Power fired a five-under par round of 67 to move seven places up the leaderboard on day three of the Barracuda Championship in Nevada.
The West Waterford professional is up to tied 15th at +26 in the PGA Tour’s only stableford event at Montreaux Golf and Country Club under the format that awards eight points for albatross, five for eagle, two for birdie and zero for par, and subtracts a point for bogey and three for double bogey or worse.
With the game’s best fighting it out at the St Jude Invitational, Power posted six birdies as he looks to get his own FedEx Cup ambitions back on track. The Olympian finds himself in 143rd position, outside the coveted top-125 in the standings who will qualify for the lucrative playoff events.
In this format, Power’s not without hope of making a big Sunday charge this evening but he’ll need some magic to do so.
Troy Merritt managed to conjure what’s needed, the American scoring five points with a 53-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th on Saturday to take a two-point lead into tonight’s final round.
Merritt had an 18-point round for a 37-point total at Montreaux Golf and Country Club. A two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Merritt made a 21-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th.
Robert Streb, the leader Saturday morning after the completion of the storm-delayed second round, was two points back after a 32-hole day. He had 10 points in the third round, closing with three straight pars.

Maguire also making strides
Meanwhile at the Symetra Tour’s CDPH Open, Leona Maguire made strides of her own in carding a four-under par 67 to ensure her safe passage to this evening’s final round.
The Cavan star recovered from a one-over par opening round to post five birdies in an effort that saw Maguire move to three-under par for the tournament, albeit seven strokes back from the lead.
