The hot and humid conditions at Cork Golf Club were reflected in the scoring as some quality numbers were produced at event seven in this year’s Irish Golfer Series.

The track at Cork was in fabulous condition and despite some treacherous pin placements, the course was conducive to good scoring which prevailed across the categories on an enjoyable Friday for all in the Rebel County.

Category One saw Bantry Bay’s Rob O’Donoghue home and hosed in 41 points to take out the competition. Out in 22 and home in 19, the 5 handicapper’s even-par effort was good enough to win any given Friday and he was happy to wait it out on the evening to collect his sparkling new Taylormade M5 Driver.

O’Donoghue beat home favourite, Terry Dillon into second spot after the Cork member lit up the turf with 40 points playing off 4.

In the Ladies competition, Kinsale’s Ann Daly defied the blistering heat with some scorching scoring as she fired a superb 37 points off 15 with a scratch to boot! Daly has a brand new Kalea Driver with her name on it after the brilliant effort.

In Gents Category Two, Thurles’ Jerry Stapleton came back late in the day sun-kissed and smiling after pipping Monkstown’s Aubrey Murnaghan for the top prize.

Murnaghan had returned a whopping 41 points of his own but was bettered by one as Stapleton’s 42 saw him get his hands on a new toy for his bag; a TaylorMade M6 Driver – and with two scratches on the card!

Perhaps it could have been different if Clonakilty’s Shane O’Donovan had survived the searing heat down the stretch to bring home the pudding. Instead O’Donovan came home in an ambulance, posting three 1’s for his last three holes but can take plenty of consolation in sleeping alongside his new high-toe wedge for months to come after claiming third.

The three category winners have all secured their places to the Grand Final at the K Club on Sunday October 27th.

Meanwhile the Gross Prize was picked up by Thurles powerhouse, Kieran Kennedy who negotiated Cork Golf Club in a magnificent two-under par 70 playing from scratch. The big-hitter landed five birdies on the day to lay down a stern marker that couldn’t be beat.

With a sparkling Motocaddy S1 Digital Trolley up for grabs for Nearest the Pin on the lucky 13th, Rathdowney’s Jason Ryan took the biscuit with his sweetly struck tee shot finishing just 3’ 6” from the pin.

While last but not least, two monstrous drives down 5 were rewarded with Taylormade stand-bags as Fermoy’s John Goggin and Killarney’s Amy Arthur took home the gold in the Gents and Ladies competitions with smashing hits.

The next Irish Golfer Series event is at Luttrellstown Castle on Sunday 28th July and spots are filling up fast. You can book now HERE
