Simon Bryan heads the Irish challenge as the Alps Tour’s Open de la Mirabelle d’Or got underway in France.

The 28-year old Druids Heath professional fired six birdies and an eagle in a superb five-under par 66 to trail the leaders by two in outright 4th spot after day one.

At around midday today, three tricolours had occupied the top-4 spots for a time but both Paul McBride and Jonathan Yates dropped back to one-under par after disappointing finishes.

Between The Island golfer and the Naas pro, the pair fired 11 birdies in all so there’s no doubt a low number is there. It will just be a case of limiting the mistakes tomorrow in the hopes of making up ground on the leaders ahead of a potential final day challenge for the title.

Also at one-under par after a day one 70 is David Carey who was another to return a mixed bag in Metz. The Castleknock star fired five birdies but sits in a share of 31st alongside a fourth Irishman, Stephen Grant after a rollercoaster day one for Ireland’s stars.

The former Shamrock Rovers footballer carded three birdies and an eagle in a much-improved display having largely struggled on the fairways so far this season.

Unfortunately for Peter Dallat, the fifth Irishman in the field, his four-over par 75 leaves him odds against making the 36-hole cut.

At the top, Lars Van Meijel and Franck Medale lead the way after setting the benchmark with seven-under par 64s.
