PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has revealed that he has sought the help of US President Donald Trump in an effort to further the negotiation process between the PGA and DP World Tours and the Public Investment Fund.
Monahan and PGA Tour Player Director Adam Scott met with the President on Tuesday, February 04, and while no details have yet emerged as to exactly what was discussed or what President Trump’s thoughts were, during last year’s election campaign he did bullishly claim that he could sort out the differences and bring the men’s professional game back together again quite easily.
“Yeah, I could certainly help,” he said, “but I could probably get it done. I would say it would take me the better part of 15 minutes to get that deal done.”
It is widely believed that the US Department of Justice and an investigation into the PGA Tour for breaches of anti-competitive practices is one of the major stumbling blocks that has prevented a deal being reached already, so it is certainly possible that the President may be able to influence proceedings.
You can read the PGA Tour’s released statement below.
“We know golf fans are eagerly anticipating a resolution to negotiations with the Public Investment Fund and want to thank President Trump for his interest and long-time support of the game of golf. We asked the President to get involved for the good of the game, the good of the country, and for all the countries involved. We are grateful that his leadership has brought us closer to a final deal, paving the way for reunification of men’s professional golf.”
