Stephanie Meadow and partner Cristie Kerr sparked on the opening day of the Dow Great Bay Lakes Invitational as they combined for a one-under 69 to sit just outside the top-10.

On a rain-affected day at Midland Country Club, which saw tee times delayed almost three hours, the pair carded two birdies and one bogey to claim an early share of 12th place at the only official team event on the LPGA Tour in Michigan.

Meadow and Kerr certainly look to have found some early momentum in the opening day’s foursomes, which saw them pick up an early birdie at the par-three 13th, their fourth hole, although they would turn level after a bogey at the par-four 16th.

However, a birdie at the par-four sixth on their way back to the clubhouse saw them home in one-under and four shots back of the all-Swedish pairing of Madelene Sagstrom and Annika Sorenstam, and France’s Pauline Roussin and the Netherlands’ Dewi Weber.

The Swedes had held a one-shot lead on their own after three birdies in a row got them to six-under, only to bogey the par-four 16th, which dropped them back alongside their fellow Europeans who had five birdies in a bogey-free outing.

It was a tougher day for Solheim Cup team-mates Leona Maguire and Mel Reid, who struggled for birdies in a two-over 72 that leaves them tied for 41st after the opening round.

The pair dropped two quick shots with bogeys at the par-five third and par-four fourth and, although they got it back with a birdie at the par-four fifth, another bogey at the par-four eighth was their last scoring hole as they finished seven shots off the early lead.

After playing foursomes on day one, the play switches to fourballs in Thursday’s second round and will alternate again for both the third and fourth rounds.
