Robert Brazill finished as best of the Irish at the Welsh Men’s Open Strokeplay at Ashburnham Golf Club despite a chastening finish to his final round.

Brazill finished in a share of 22nd place on twelve-over after a final round of five-over 77.

The Naas golfer got off to a rocky start with two bogeys in his first two holes but rallied with birdies on the fifth and seventh to turn in level-par 36 and a seven-over score.

At that stage the former Bridgestone Order of Merit winner was just five shots adrift of the lead but a difficult back nine put paid to his outside chances.

Brazill bogeyed the 12th and 16th to slip down the leaderboard but a catastrophic triple-bogey on the 18th saw him finish with a whimper and leave a sour taste in the mouth as he came home in 41.

In the end, the Kildare native finished thirteen shots behind eventual winner Caolan Burford who shot an excellent final round of three-under 69 to finish on one-under and win by a shot from Welsh compatriot Matt Roberts.

Roberts piled on the pressure with a round of the day of five-under 67.

Portmarnock native Brandon St John finished in a share of 26th on thirteen-over after a final round of seven-over 79.

St John who came through a qualifier to compete in the West of Ireland Championship over the Easter weekend had a rollercoaster round that included three double-bogeys, three bogeys and a pair of birdies.
