Banbridge’s Olivia Mehaffey has been named 14th on the Arnold Palmer Cup’s first rankings of spring 2019.

The Arizona State junior, who last year was part of the first occasion in which women were included in the Ryder Cup-style competition, was also added to the watch list for the international team in the autumn.

Mehaffey was awarded the Michael Carter “Junior” Memorial Award given to the Palmer Cup participants – one male, one female – who best represent the qualities and ideals of sportsmanship, integrity, and upholding of the game. The award is named in remembrance of Michael Carter, a member of the Penn State men’s golf team who died in a car accident in 2002.

The next Arnold Palmer Cup ranking will be announced February 28.

It’s another good news story of 2019 for Mehaffey who received a welcomed surprise in the mail last month; an invite to contest the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur set to be held the week before the Masters.

The current world amateur number 22 will be part of the historic 54-hole stroke play competition on April 3-6 where amateur women will get the chance to compete amongst the azaleas of Augusta National for their final round.

The field will play the first 36-holes of the Championship at the Champions Retreat Golf Club before entering Augusta National for an official practice round Friday, April 5.

A 36-hole cut to the top-30 players will then finish the tournament on the famous hallowed ground of Augusta on April 6, the Saturday before the Masters.

It’s only early days in 2019 but the year sure is shaping up to be a good one for the Arizona State star.
