Determined to keep his scoring as hot as the baking heat, Purcell fired eight birdies to move 35 places up the leaderboard into a share of third spot, comfortably qualifying as part of the top-64 who commence the Matchplay rounds on Thursday.
However despite his wonderful scoring, World No. 7 David Micheluzzi left the world-class field in his wake as the powerhouse shot a second consecutive eight-under-par round; his 64 following a 63 at nearby Spring Valley in round one.
The winning medallist and number one seed, Micheluzzi, sets the standard having built an eight-shot lead over Blake Windred, with Purcell one further back heading into the Matchplay stages.
Both men’s and women’s crowns will be awarded on Sunday at Woodlands after the match play finals.
