Swords golfer, Julie McCarthy carded a second round two-over-par 74 to help her Auburn College teammates into third place with a round to go at the Alexa Stirling Women’s Intercollegiate Invitational.

Now in her second semester at the renowned university in Alabama, the Dubliner fired three birdies on her way to a five-over-par 36-hole total, good enough for a share of 15thspot in the individual standings.

McCarthy, a plus one handicapper when making the move Stateside, made a name for herself on Irish shores in 2016 when at just 17, she claimed the Ulster, Leinster and Connacht Girls Championships to go with her second Irish Girls Close title at Kilkenny GC.

But she wasn’t alone in her exploits for Auburn so far this week. Her teammate, Auburn sophomore Kaleigh Telfer, caught fire on the back nine Saturday and birdied six of the final nine holes to finish with a 70 (-2) in the second round.

Telfer, who is playing in the No. 1 spot for the Tigers this weekend, is now 1-over for the tournament and in fourth place on the overall player leaderboard. Her nine birdies through the first two rounds ranks third among all players, one behind the leaders.

As a team, Auburn shot 299 (+11) in the second round and remain in third place at 593 (+17) heading into Sunday’s final round at the Atlanta Athletic Club (par 72; 6,210 yards).

Sophomore Mychael O’Berry followed up her team-high 71 from Friday with a 3-over 75 in the second round. She’s one shot back of Telfer and tied for fifth overall.

Playing as an individual, Chandler Rosholt birdied four holes Saturday, including three on the front nine, and finished with a 76 (+4). The freshman is now 7-over and tied for 21st in what is her first tournament at Auburn.

It’s the second tournament for Auburn’s other two freshmen, Anika Bolcíková and Brooke Sansom, who are currently in a tie for 31st at 10-over through the first two rounds. Bolcíková shot an 81 (+9) on Saturday, and Sansom – playing as an individual – carded a round of 80 (+8).

Junior Elena Hualde Zúñiga also shot an 80 (+8) in Saturday’s second round and is tied for 39th overall.

Louisville leads the field at 8-over par (584), followed by Virginia Tech (586), Auburn (593), Georgia (594), Indiana (595), East Carolina (603), Kennesaw State (605), Mercer (616), Coastal Carolina (624), Dartmouth College (630) and Georgia State (631).

Auburn will once again be paired with Louisville and Virginia Tech for the third and final round, and the group will tee off Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CT.
