At the AIG Cups & Shields which are taking place in Thurles Golf Club this week it was a big day for Athenry as they defeated a much fancied Dundalk side to capture the AIG Barton Shield while Nenagh won out against Athlone in the AIG Pierse Purcell Shield.
Athenry won by three holes with Louis O’Hara & Joe Bernie Jnr beating Aaron Grant & Conor Curran by 4 holes while in the second match Darren Leufer & Allan Hill lost to Caolan Rafferty & Eoin Murphy by 1 hole.
Meanwhile, in the Pierse Purcell Shield, Athlone’s Ciaran O’Connor & Tadg Mannion halved with Denis Corrigan & Martin Fogarty and Michael Ryan & Denis Earley lost to Gerard Clifford & Tom Quinlisk 3&2 to leave Athlone needing to pick up some quick points. However it didn’t get any better for them as Liam Browne & Denis Hellen could only half with Pat Ryan & Mark O’Dwyer, Aidan O’Driscoll & John Galvin lost to David Hickey & Martin Reddan 8&6 and Paul Burke & Declan Corcoran lost to James Reddan & Pat J Hogan 5&3, leaving Nenagh with a 4-1 victory.
The AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield was at the semi-final stage today with Kinsale and Hermitage being the big winners as they overcame Lisburn 3.5 to 1.5 and Tuam 3 to 3 respectively.
Tomorrow’s matches see the semi-finals of the Senior and Junior Cups as well as the Jimmy Bruen Final and the details are as follows;
