Lisburn’s Paula Grant got off to a solid start as the the second of the Home Union Open Stroke Play Championships got underway at Aberdovey in Wales, May 4 – 6.

Ireland have a great tradition at the event with Olivia Mehaffey picking up back-to-back Welsh Ladies Open Amateur Stroke Play titles in 2015 and 2016, at the 54 hole stroke play event played over three days.

Fresh from her 2018 Curtis Cup team selection, Grant looked in similarly fine form as she fired five birdies en route to her solid even par start, good enough for a tie for 8th, while Ballinrobe’s Shannon Burke returned one shot more for a tie for 15th on one-over-par.

England’s Sophie Lamb leads the way on minus four after a flawless round that included two birdies and a stunning eagle on the par-5 16th as she posted a cool 69 strokes.

Milltown’s Georgia Carr is next best of the Irish on plus three with Grange’s Elisa Corcoran on plus six while Hermitage’s Canice Screene is in a tie for 53rd on eight-over-par.
