The 22nd J.B.Carr Diamond Trophy, a Scotch foursomes format, was completed in Woodenbridge Golf Club last weekend. It resulted in another weekend win for the county of Galway, whose hurling minors and seniors were followed by golfing seniors who defeated the K Club. Pat Corcoran (Woodenbridge), Portuma Lady Captain Carmel McLoughlin, Portuma club captain Pat Healy, Portuma team captain Dick Quinlivan and Portuma club president Paddy Kelly The Portumna team defeated the K Club 3.5 to 1.5 in an exciting final with Strabane defeating Fermoy by a similar margin for third place. In the provincial finals Portumna defeated Enniscrone; K Club defeated Royal Dublin; Fermoy overcame Dungarvan; Strabane defeated Dunmurry. The competition was started in 1996 with 67 teams competing. It has effectively become the Senior Club Championship of Ireland (over 60s) named after the legendary Dr. Joe Carr. A scotch foursomes matchplay format is used and the perpetual trophy, donated by Joe Carr, is a silver salver that Carr won in the Irish Close in 1951. This year, the competition started in April with 180 teams and over 2,000 golfers playing 220 matches. The four finalists were worthy representatives of their provinces and marched proudly behind their provincial flags as they were piped across the bridge into Woodenbridge, Co Wicklow, for the opening ceremony on Friday.
