O’Neill came through a difficult first round tie with Elliot Anger (France), winning by one hole which earned him a place in the last 64, where he faced Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg. O’Neill was much more comfortable and was two up through 12 before clinching the match on 16.

The Connacht teenager plays England’s Aadam Syed next but he is the only Irish player still standing as Jack Doherty (Carton House) won his first round match 3&1 but bowed out in round two. Athenry duo David Kitt and Allan Hill were also beaten in round two.

In the girls event both Valeria Clancy and Lauren Walsh were beaten in the second round of matchplay and no Irish players are left to contend for the title.
