John Ross Galbraith (Whitehead) was pipped at the post at the St Andrews Trophy yesterday as he couldn’t quite hold off the challenge of Matthew Jordan (Royal Liverpool).

Leading by one shot from a group of players and facing 36 holes on the final days play, Galbraith was on course to take the title back to Ireland again after Conor O’Rourke’s 2016 victory.   However, a morning round of 70 saw him tied at the top with Jordan who was then five under par through 12 holes in the afternoon, giving him a strong lead.  Jordan then went on to bogey three of the last six holes but the lead was in place and even Galbraith’s brace of birdies on 15 and 18 weren’t enough to catch the Englishman who finished on a total of 277 (-11) to win by one shot.

Of the other Irish players that made the cut Robin Dawson was best placed after rounds of of 74 and 70 on Sunday saw him finish in 11th place on -4, the same final score as Conor Purcell and Colm Campbell. Jordan Hood finished in 30th on -1, while defending champion Conor O’Rourke finished in 42nd place after rounds of 74 and 75 on the final day. Jonathan Yates and Caolan Rafferty finished on +5.
