Day one of the Carey Cup taking place at Galway Bay Golf Resort ended in a tie with both teams claiming three hard fought points with the MGA looking to take back the title that the GUI team won in 2015 at Metedeconk.

MGA had taken an early 2-1 lead from the morning session but the GUI team battled hard to take two points in the afternoon fourballs to leave the match all square heading into the singles session this morning.

Naas’ Conor O’Rourke and Jonathan Yates were on top form as they won both their morning and afternoon points with Colm Campbell and Mark Power winning their fourball match against Stewart Hagestad and Ethan Ng.

There are some interesting looking matches in the singles not least of which is Colm Campbell versus Stewart Hagestad in the final pairing and to win the match 3.5 points are required by either side so it could come down to those two in the decider.

Thursday Matches
0830 – Singles (GUI names first)
Alex Gleeson v Darin Goldstein
Mark Power v Ethan Ng
Conor O’Rourke v Brian Komline
Kevin Le Blanc v Trevor Randolph
Jonathan Yates v Tyler Cline
Colm Campbell v Stewart Hagestad
