If you are looking to see some of the stars of the future then get over to Roganstown today or tomorrow for the Irish Girls U18 Strokeplay Championship. The international field of 104 players representing 15 countries got underway at the North Dublin venue yesterday and play continues until Sunday. The event is a 54 hole strokeplay with a cut made after play today where the top 50 players plus ties progress to tomorrow. After day one Ireland’s Valerie Clancy (Killarney) and Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) are top of the leaderboard on two under par, two strokes ahead of Ingrid Lindblad of Sweden. Clancy (Killarney) got off to a fast start with birdies at the 2, 4 and 7 before dropping a shot on both 8 and 14 but birdied the last. “I don’t feel like I played my absolute best today,” she said, “the birdies I made, I just hit it very close but I also had to get up and down a few times to keep my score going.” Annabel Wilson is the highest world ranked player in the field and she managed 5 birdies in her opening round, with three of them in the final four holes. She also signed for a 2 under par 69 which left her tied for the lead after round 1. Fifteen-year-old Wilson has claimed two Irish Girls Close Championship titles thus far in her young career and an Irish Girls Open title may now be in her sights.
